I quit! — Cybersecurity Burnout

“If you are in cybersecurity and are constantly feeling angry, exhausted, bitter and you jump up to the ceiling when your company mobile rings — welcome to the burnout club.”
So begins the article “I Quit! – Cybersecurity Burnout” which Kevin Shaw kindly shared with me yesterday, now doing the rounds in CISO circles. It seems a lot of people are relating to this. I said to Kevin, that article seems to really validate the need we’re addressing through Cybermindz.org. His response was slightly chilling: ‘You don’t need validation’.
The point of this post is to reassure our cyber colleagues that burnout is not the inevitable outcome of working in cyber. At least, it doesn’t have to be.
There has been a lot of talk around the suffering, which is what prompted the creation of our NFP, Cybermindz.org. But the time for talk, as important as it is, must give way to practical interventions which are cyber oriented, evidence-based, scalable and effective that you and your teams can be doing RIGHT NOW to prevent the slide down into ‘I Quit’ territory.
Heavens knows, we don’t need to be losing anyone from cyber right now. This isn’t meant to be a pitch, as much as sharing my sense of urgency that now that we’ve identified the problem – it’s time to actually investigate preventative solutions that preempt the EAP, then invest in protecting your teams, nurturing them, keeping them engaged and loving the mission of working in this great and important field. #mentalhealth #burnoutprevention #cybersecurity #ciso
